Ancient Rome is set to look very Irish as Barry Keoghan is reported to be in talks to join fellow Irish star Paul Mescal in the Gladiator sequel.

The Oscar-nominated actor, 30, has made an incredible name for himself in recent years, having appeared in the likes of Marvel’s Eternals and, most recently, the highly acclaimed Banshees of Inisherin.

Barry, who last year welcomed his first child with girlfriend Alyson Sandro, is now reportedly set to take on a major role in Sir Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2.

According to The Holywood Reporter, Barry is in talks to play Emperor Geta, based on a real Roman emperor from history.

The rumours come as Normal People star – and fellow Oscar-nominated actor – Paul was confirmed to be taking on the lead role in the sequel.

First rumoured in January of this year, Paul referenced the major role at a red carpet interview with Variety in March and said he was ‘working hard’ to get the muscles to play the warrior.

It’s believed the sequel, announced by Sir Ridley in 2021, will tie in to the original via the son of Lucille and nephew of the now-deceased Roman leader Commodus – Lucius Verus, who was a child in the first movie.

A source told Deadline in January that the director continued to meet with other actors but it was apparently clear to everyone involved that the Irish actor was his top choice.

Gladiator starred Russell Crowe as a former Roman General who was sent into slavery before seeking revenge against the emperor who murdered his family.

Released in 2000, Sir Ridley’s acclaimed blockbuster won five Academy Awards, including best picture gong and best actor for leading man Crowe, while also scooping a string of other accolades including Baftas and Golden Globes.

Russell has also spoken about the much-desired sequel – to be set 25 to 30 years after the first – saying he was ‘hopeful’ for the follow-up.

This is, unfortunately, unlike, considering his character did not come out alive of the first one.
