Coronation Street: Maureen Lipman on possible love for Evelyn and Roy | Soaps

Evelyn and Roy have become great friends (Pictures: ITV)

Sharp-tongued Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) and mild-mannered Roy Cropper (David Neilson) might seem like the unlikeliest of couples, but since Evelyn established herself as a Coronation Street regular the pair have developed a close friendship.

This is due to be severely tested in upcoming episodes as Evelyn holds Roy responsible for the death of her beloved dog Cerberus.

Roy doesn’t spot that a rogue Eccles cake has landed on the floor at Roy’s Rolls. Cerberus snaps up the sweet treat, but as raisins are toxic to dogs he soon falls ill and, in some truly sad scenes, eventually has to be put to sleep.

Maureen Lipman told us that Evelyn’s anger at Roy risks her losing a great friend, as well as losing her dog.

‘Roy is basically the only person who gets Evelyn and she gets him. It is doubly hard because this situation could mean she loses his friendship,’ she explained.

Evelyn soon realises that she can’t stay angry with Roy – who’s devastated by the dog’s death – for long. ‘She feels sorry for him and sends him to Coventry for a while,’ Maureen said, ‘Roy understands about grieving. He gets where she’s coming from, it doesn’t take much to bring her round because she knows where her bread’s best buttered.’

The friendship between Roy and Evelyn is based on Evelyn’s perception of the café owner as being more intellectual that most people in the street, according to Maureen.

‘Evelyn’s point of view is, for some reason, because he’s slightly more erudite than anyone else in the street and she fancies herself as someone who does sudoku. He doesn’t answer her back, is the same sort of age and helped her when Cerberus went missing, then she enjoys his company.

‘Look, she goes and pays money for a cup of tea she could make at home in Roy’s, quite frequently, so she does want to spend time with him.’

But asked whether the friendship between the two could become romantic – and even physical – Maureen is quite adamant:

‘I don’t think Evelyn has the hots for Roy, or him for her,’ she maintained. ‘It’s lukewarm at best and I don’t think she’s going to get her vest off. But there are many forms of love, they’re lonely people. She had the chance for romance with Arthur (Paul Copley) and sort of blew it. I think the stable door is shut and the horse has bolted!’

She hopes, however, that it’s a relationship that will continue because she enjoys working with David Neilson so much. ‘David Neilson is an actor after my own heart,’ she said. ‘He’s extremely detailed and full of subtext and I like working with him.
