Ruthie Henshall has called for her Coronation Street character Estelle to appear in the soap for a longer period of time.

The West End actress, 56, guest starred as the character last week, reconnecting with an old friend – Rovers Return barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger).

The I’m A Celebrity star has since said she would love to continue playing the character.

When asked if she would like to star as Estelle again by Inside Soap, she said: ‘After the experience I’ve just had, yes I would.

‘I loved doing something different every day – it’s great for a girl whose attention span is not great.

‘In theatre I’ll rehearse a show for a month then I’m saying the same words eight shows a week. That is a kind of discipline – but in a soap it’s full-on if you’re in a developing storyline. The turnover is so fast.’

She went on to suggest some future storylines for her as-yet unconfirmed return to the soap.

‘I want her marriage to break down, for her to get a love interest and cause a bit of trouble.

‘And I’d love some scenes with Evelyn, she would clean Estelle. I know Maureen Lipman – I co-produced her last show and she is just phenomenal. [Or] The Rovers Return needs Estelle and Glenda to entertain punters with the odd duet.’

Viewers first met Estelle having a run-in with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) about the cost of her mother’s funeral, before bumping into Glenda and reminiscing over their time on the cruise ships together.

Estelle tried to talk Glenda into buying into her theatre school franchise, Little Big Shotz, with Glenda agreeing and approaching George and Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) for the cash.

While George wants to lend the money to Glenda, Eileen is skeptical and believes the theatre school to be a scam.

She is left furious when she overhears Glenda say only two children have signed up for theatre classes, however, her luck turns around when her first class goes off without a hitch.

Speaking about the role ahead of her hitting our screens, Ruthie said: ‘This is one of the most enjoyable guest roles of my career.

‘Everyone is so welcoming and I can’t believe after years of the street being in my life that I finally get to tread the cobbles.’

She was also keen to sing the praises of her co-stars: ‘Getting to act with Jodie was a joy and every member of the cast was welcoming and kind.’
