Hold Me Closer video gives fans ‘goosebumps’, despite no Britney Spears

The official music video for Hold Me Closer, Britney Spears’ duet with Sir Elton John, has dropped, with many of her fans bowled over by it – despite the pop icon not making an appearance herself.

Ahead of its release late on Tuesday, fans were flooding the comments on YouTube under the scheduled premiere to voice their excitement and hopes that they might see their favourite singer.

‘I can’t wait. I hope to see our princess Britney on it,’ shared one, while another added: ‘I don’t think we’ll see britney appear in this video…. but if she’s in it I will be grateful to elton 4 the rest of my life.’

Hold Me Closer mixes Sir Elton’s 1971 hit Tiny Dancer with his 1992 song The One, while parts of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart from 1976 also feature in the hit track.

The official video, directed by Tanu Muino, was revealed to be an artistic dance piece when it dropped, with pairs of dancers performing intimate routines and embracing in various, vibrantly coloured settings.

However, praise began pouring in instantly, with fans impressed by the video despite it not featuring either Britney or Sir Elton.

‘This just unexpectedly gave me the goosebumps, a brilliant piece of art!’ shared one fan.

‘Why am I crying? The colours, the dancing, the passion, the love, the art, everything!’ gushed another.

Some were seeing parallels with the 40-year-old’s improvised dancing videos, which she regularly uploads to Instagram.

One person commented: ‘This video gave me goosebumps… I feel like the choreography was inspired by Britney’s Instagram videos. The gestures, facial expressions, improvisations, and everything.’

‘This is art… Being free with your moves just to express an emotion .. that’s exactly what britney does in her insta videos she just dancing to heal but people don’t get it,’ chimed in someone else.

Many referred to their initial hopes they would see Britney, revealing that they had been completely won over by Muino’s vision and the dancers’ performances and ‘understood’ why the chart-topper might not have wanted to be in the video herself.

‘Even though Britney and Elton are not in it, the video is pure magic and art,’ stated one viewer.

‘At first I was super disappointed that Britney wasn’t in this video but I really love the video now because of the amazing dancers and set designs,’ admitted another.

‘I loved it !! Even tho I would have loved for a Britney an Elton music video … this is awesome & it really feels like it flows completely with the song.’

Another fan insisted: ‘It’s perfect…people forget just bc an artist creates a video doesn’t mean they need to be in it. I think it’s great with all the dancers.’

Muino herself called the experience an ‘emotional one’ and said she had been inspired to become a director after seeing one of Britney’s videos and had ‘grown up’ listening to the work of Sir Elton.

Muino, who is also known for directing music videos for artists including Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, Cardi B and Lizzo, said she had wanted to create something that would ‘raise eyebrows’ and make Sir Elton and Spears ‘proud’.

‘This was an emotional one for me as I grew up with Britney,’ she said.

‘After seeing Slave 4 U, I decided that I wanted to become a video director [and] Elton John is an icon that I and the world grew up listening to.’

She continued: ‘Going into this video, I knew there would be a lot of emotional expectations the audience and fans would have. With this responsibility, I had to do something different and unexpected. The visuals had to be different.

‘The dance had to be forward-thinking to raise eyebrows and make Elton and Britney proud.

‘Getting the best dancers, crew, and access to some of the most private locations in the world was simple as everyone wanted to work with Elton John and be part of his legacy.’

Hold Me Closer marks Britney’s first new music in six years and her first release since the end of a controversial 13-year conservatorship.

Sir Elton previously said he wanted the collaboration to ‘enlighten everybody’ that Britney is ‘one of the great pop stars of the world’.
