What does it mean to be a ‘mompreneur’ — in 200 words or less?

media update’s Lara Smit delves into what it means to be a mother who runs her own empire here:

If you haven’t done the maths by now, the term ‘mompreneur’ is a combination of the words ‘mom’ and ‘entrepreneur’.

As masters of multi-tasking, these ladies have managed to run businesses while still being full-time parents. What is a part-time parent, anyway?

Although these ladies make it look easy, being a mompreneur comes with many challenges. Some of these include:

  • having little time to complete tasks and network
  • stigmas about what a women’s ‘role’ in society looks like
  • having less flexibility
  • a multitude of distractions coming from each direction, and
  • experiencing mom guilt.

But don’t let these challenges scare you away from pursuing a career as a mompreneur. Why? Well, alongside these challenges are various opportunities to grow.

Mompreneurs learn incredible skills and bring essential attributes to the working world — like enhanced adaptability and some stellar patience.

Although it may be daunting, there are many amazing benefits to being a mompreneur, like:

  • having more autonomy over your work life
  • spending quality time with your children while still growing your career
  • being able to teach your children about self-sufficiency, and
  • learning how to master the challenges of flexibility and time limitations.
