What generation am I? Find out if you are a Millennial, Gen Z, or Boomer

Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Z, Millennials, the list goes on – as every generation has a defining label.

And whether you’re an out-of-touch Millennial who still uses emoji or a TikTok-trend-obsessed Gen Z, each generation has a set of stereotypes attached to them.

But which generation do you fall into – and what does it mean?

So, here are the (rough) birth years for each category, and how old some of these generational groups are today.

Which generation am I? These are the different categories

Which generation are you part of?

The generational birth years are as follows:

  • Generation Alpha – born 2013 to 2025
  • Generation Z – born 1997 to 2012
  • Millennials (sometimes ‘Generation Y’) – born 1981 to 1996
  • Generation X – born 1965 to 1980
  • Boomers II – born 1955 to 1964
  • Boomers I – born 1946 to 1954
  • Silent Generation – born 1928 to 1945
  • Greatest Generation – born 1922 to 1927.

Pew Research Center in the US defines the Boomer, Gen X and Millennial generations as listed above.

Generation Alpha is a bit trickier – as the definitions vary quite a lot. Some say the youngest generation started being born in 2010, while others say it’s from 2013.

What are Millennials?

Millennials can also be described as Generation Y, as they succeed Generation X and precede Generation Z.

Millennials are between the ages of 26 and 42 at the time of writing, and were roughly born between 1981 and 1996.

They are often seen as the generation who have been hit hard when it comes to university fees and buying a house, and are also associated with spending their money on avocados and travelling.

Millennials are also being hit ‘career’ fatigue, it’s been said, as research shows a work related rut is often hit by age 37.

What is Gen Z?

Gen Z, also known as Zoomers, are usually associated with being wizzes of social media and technology.

They are known for their love of TikTok and environmental activism (the most famous Zoomer eco-warrior being Greta Thunberg) – though research has also show them to be the ‘loneliest generation’.

The group has also made headlines by taking aim at Millennials for their hair side partings and skinny jeans.

Gen Z will have been born between 1997 and 2012, making them currently between the ages of 10 and 26.

What is Gen X?

Gen X’s birth dates are estimated to range between 1965 and 1980, making the current population in this category between 42 and 58.

This generation is recognised as having the ability to balance a strong work ethic with a laid-back attitude.

They are also associated with making popular the music genres of punk, indie, grunge and techno.

What are Boomers?

Baby Boomers or just ‘Boomers’ are the generation after the Silent Generation, and are currently around 58 to 77 years old.

They’re named Boomers as they were part of a ‘baby boom’– a rise in fertility rates – in many countries around the world, after the Second World War and in the following years.

Investopedia calls them an ‘economically influential’ generation, and they’re often associated with critiques of Millennials and Gen Z. And that’s where the clapback ‘OK Boomer’ meme comes from…
